<image:caption>Digital Photography. 11 x 14 in (framed) Image content: Documentation of El Eco, a public sculpture made by Argentinian female artist Lola Mora, in 1906. This sculpture is located at the ex-Zoo in Buenos Aires since 1910. It was part of a monument commissioned to the artist, but destroyed hours before its inauguration. “El Eco” is all that is left from the original monument that was vandalized for unknown reasons, displaced without supervision, disappeared without leaving record, and forgotten. I’ve been working for over a year on a project that will bring this story to light in 2019. Coming soon.</image:caption>

This project was developed after reading "Independent People" by Halldór Laxness, which is considered the quintessential Icelandic work of literature. All the pieces in this installation respond to an excerpt of this novel -a conversation that the two main characters (husband and wife) have at the beginning of the book. This interpretation of the original book challenges the macho style of the main male figure and presents two female characters as the main couple. <image:title>Work - 'Collage#2' from the series 'Brides and Statues' 2017-ongoing.</image:title>
<image:caption>Paper size: 11 x 14 in Since 2017 I’ve been working in four series of collages: Brides and Statues (from a vintage catalog about the history of bridal gowns), Movies (from catalogs of movie stars like Greta Garbo), Romance and Statues (from covers of pulp novels) and Life and Statues (from vintage Life magazines), all in combination with images of public statues, and additional miscellaneous items such as flowers and clothing accessories. The interaction of the human/ personal with the monumental/ historical ‘activates’ the statue, which abandons its rigidity to become human, be vulnerable, and ‘mingle’ with characters of various genders. These mini stories are designed in a ‘romantic comedy’ style, which can be understood also as a critique on gender roles and power. <image:title>Work - Fembow, 2021 (detail)</image:title>
<image:caption>laser cut- digital print on Sintra, acrylic, PVC plumbing female elbows, and spray paint, 55 in (h) x 130 in (d) x 45 in (w) total approx. These representations of female bodies (Greek maenads) printed at human scale seem to be almost ‘falling’ and ‘supported’ by an object made of female elbows (plumbing material), creating a kind of cane that offers support to the panels/figures. This message of sorority was inspired by Plutarch’s story “The Women of Amphissa” Currently on view at Bronx Calling: The Fifth AIM Biennial, The Bronx Museum, 2021-22 Photographs by Catalina Muñoz Schliebener</image:caption>
